Update from Mark's Brother
Sadly on August 18th 2007 Mark passed away he fought on very bravely but the
cancer returned with such ferocity that there was little that
could be done.
His courage in the face of the most horrific and terrifying dilemma even after
being told the disease had reached a terminal stage was
amazing, he never gave up. Even the day before he died we were planning how
to raise awareness via the charity and website, to achieve
the goal of helping people with the same condition make the most of their lives.
I remember listening to him speaking over the phone with a cancer sufferer while
we travelling back from one of the many hospital visits.
Listening to the advise and help he was giving the person on the other end of the
phone, you wouldn't have thought that he had cancer
himself but that he was a counsellor or a doctor helping a patient. I never told my brother
how much I was amazed by the conversation, I wish that I had.
As I write this, I am listening to a song by The Specials. One of the lyrics
is "nobody is, special". I think they got it wrong because in my
brother's case "Frankie" he was special. That sounds cheesy
but it's true, and to so many people that new him, they remember
his kindness and his fantastic sense of humour.
He is sadly missed
Mark Franklin's story
In March 2005 I was diagnosed with kidney cancer when an 8cm tumour was discovered
in my left kidney. This kidney was removed in
April 2005 along with my lower rib. Later in June after the next scan I was given
the all clear although the so called experts had managed
to miss a 2cm tumour in my remaining kidney. After my scan in November 2005 the
tumour had grown to 4cm and was found along with
disease spread to the lungs. I was told the disease was now terminal and discovered
the average survival time was six months. more...
There is currently a petition to 10 Downing Sreet to make Sutent & Nexavar
available to kidney cancer patients via the NHS.
